What's a Podcast?

A podcast can be thought of as internet radio.  The word comes from iPOD--those little sound things that teenagers listen to, and broadCAST.  You don't need an iPod to listen, just a computer.  You can also store the podcast on CDs to listen to them on your stereo or in your car.  The two great things are (1) its free--free to broadcast and free to listen, and (2) you can listen whenever and as often as you want.

Podcasting enables you to listen to audio files at the time and place of your choosing.  And by subscribing you can download the podcasts effortlessly while your computer is not being used for something else.

To subscribe you must have podcasting software installed on your computer (see below for options).  Follow your program's instructions for subscribing to podcasts and modifying preference settings for updates, for example daily or weekly.  You can listen directly from your computer through the software, or on-the-go by synching up a portable MP3 player, such as an iPod.

The usual way of working with podcasts is that you subscribe to a number of podcasts that interest you, then sometime when you're not using your computer, you run iTunes and tell it to update your podcasts (there's an update button in the upper right-hand corner of the podcast screen) then while you're asleep or walking the dog, the podcasts are downloaded.  Then you can drag the podcasts to your iPod or a CD and listen to them at your leisure.

How to subscribe to our podcast
  •  Download the software, iTunes is probably easiest unless you're already using another one.
  •  Start the program, i.e. click on the iTunes icon.
  •  In iTunes, click on "Music Store," click on "Podcasts," enter "Emerald Coast" in the search window.
  •  Find "Emerald Coast Baha'i Podcast"
  •  Click on the "Subscribe" button
  •  If you use iPodder of some other podcast aggregator, copy and paste this link: http://www.infosecsys.com/podcasts/ EmeraldCoastBahaiPodCasts.xml into your software's subscribe window.
  •  Adjust your download Preferences:

On a PC, click the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences," then select "Podcasts."  You have to decide how often you want iTunes to check for new podcasts.

On a Mac, select "Preferences" on the "iTunes" menu and then select "Podcasts."  You have to decide how often you want iTunes to check for new podcasts.

With a dial-up connection, you might want to leave your computer on overnight and tell it to download new podcasts after you've gone to bed.  With a broadband connection, you might want to select "manual" and just hit the "Update" button in the upper right hand corner when you go to lunch.

  •  Read the iTunes instructions on how to put the podcast onto a CD, or onto an iPod.
  •  If all else fails, ask any teenager :-)  I know it sounds complicated but once you see it done, it's really very simple.
